Eight Things To Know Before Getting Invisalign

Here at Star Orthodontics we are firm believers that a beautiful, healthy smile is attainable for everyone, and we encourage all of our current and potential patients to seek the smile of their dreams. With the sleek technology of Invisalign, one of the most convenient and effective treatment methods out there, straightening your teeth has never been easier. We believe in patient education and want you to be prepared and ready for your orthodontic treatment. If you are considering Invisalign for yourself or a family member or have an upcoming appointment to get your new aligners, this blog post highlights eight things you should know before starting your Invisalign treatment.

  1. Enjoying drinks – While wearing your aligners, you should only drink cold water. Hot water or tea can melt or warp them, so sip those after easily removing your trays.
  2. Lipstick – Lipstick can stain your aligners, so stick to clear lip-gloss or go au natural while wearing them.
  3. How often to wear aligners - We recommend wearing your Invisalign clear aligners for twenty-two hours a day. Otherwise, straightening your teeth can take much longer than planned.
  4. Brushing best practices – You should brush in the morning, after meals, and at nighttime before bed, which often comes out to around six times a day. It’s important to keep your smile clean and healthy by brushing regularly!
  5. Attachments - Attachments are enamel colored ridges that are bonded to your teeth to help the Invisalign aligners work faster and more efficiently. They are the same color as your teeth and will be barely noticeable!
  6. Refinements - Similar to braces needing a retention period, Invisalign is often followed by a "refinement period" after your treatment, where you will get aligners specially meant to keep your teeth in their new straight positions.
  7. Staining - Both the attachments and the aligners can stain easily. Be sure to brush your teeth after every meal.
  8. Whitening – Teeth whitening cannot be completed during your treatment, but once you are done, you are free to compliment your smile with a whitening procedure!
