Keeping Your Smile Safe With Custom-Made Mouth Guards

Now that fall is here, the beginning of the season for many various sports that will be played by young children and teens around the country, especially football and hockey, has finally arrived. We here at Star Orthodontics always want our patients to have fun and be active, but we also want them to be safe. We highly recommend that every child, teen, or adult playing a contact sport wear a custom-made mouth guard to protect their mouth, whether they have braces or not.

The Various Types Of Mouth Guards
Different types of mouth guards exist on the market today. Basic stock mouth guards can be found on any store shelf and do not conform to the uniqueness of your bite, jaw, and teeth. Another type of mouth guard that can be bought off the shelf are “boil and bite” mouth guards, which are boiled until soft and malleable, then placed in the mouth to slightly customize to your bite. While they are better at protecting your mouth than basic stock mouth guards, boil and bite mouth guards are still bulky, uncomfortable, and do not offer the highest level of protection.

The best protection comes from a custom-made mouth guard generated by an orthodontist or dentist laboratory. Customized mouth guards fit easily and comfortably in your mouth, are tear-resistant, and come well fitted to your mouth’s unique dimensions. They provide the best grade of safety on the market, and can even be generated specifically for the type of sport that is being played by the wearer. They are pricier than stock or boil and bite types, but they are the best at preventing dental issues that arise from poor or no protection, which can cost thousands of dollars. Whether you have clear braces, metal braces, or Invisalign, custom-made mouth guards are the ideal choice to keep your smile beautiful and healthy.
