Here at Star Orthodontics, our mission is to ensure the total oral health of all of our patients at every age, so February happens to be one of our (and Starla's) favorite months of the year - it's National Children's Dental Health Month! For this blog, we'll take a look at some fun strategies for helping kids maintain great oral health and build dental hygiene habits that will last them - and their smile - a lifetime.

  1. Start Early: Habit is a powerful thing, and the earlier a habit is started, the more solidly it will form. Make sure that, from a very young age, keeping up good dental hygiene is routine for you and your family. If they've been doing it for their entire lives, they're much less likely to see it as a burden.
  2. Use Just Enough Fluoride: Fluoride is one of the greatest advances in dentistry. It's a huge boost to tooth enamel and keeps teeth strong against onslaughts of food and acid. However, for young children, too much can be unhealthy - make sure to use no more than a pea-sized amount on the toothbrush.
  3. Brush, Floss, and Eat: Everyone knows that good oral health means brushing and flossing two times a day, but what many don't consider is how their diet can affect their teeth. Eating healthy foods creates less acid in the mouth and has less of a tendency to stain teeth. Be especially sure to avoid sugary foods like candy and colored drinks like soda.
  4. Braces Are Your Friend: Braces have become something of a rite of passage for adolescents, but it's never too early, or too late, to start thinking about them. The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that your child have their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7 – this will give our orthodontists enough information to determine when and in what capacity your child will need braces or other orthodontic treatment. On the other end of the spectrum, about 20% of our patients with braces are over 25 years of age. It's never too late to invest in your smile!
  5. Get Checked Up: While great oral hygiene is incredibly important, always remember to supplement it with trips to the dentist! You and your family should be visiting your General Dentist every 6 months for a cleaning. Only a professional dentist or orthodontist can truly determine how healthy a child's teeth are and make judgments about what treatment, if any, is needed.
